Favignana, together with the smaller Marettimo and Levanzo islands, forms part of the Aegadian Isles and takes its name from the Foehn wind, theancient Greek “Wind God”, which makes the climate here so mild. Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, it is renowned for its unusual butterfly shape (with its plains to the west and the woods to the east that are united by the 315 metre high MountGrossa). Already in prehistoric times, it was a place chosen for the first human settlements. Indeed, here you will find the traces of the first Paleolithic tribes in the grottos near S. Nicola bay, which was the port of the island for centuries. Other Paleolithic and Neolithic cave paintings can also be admired at the famous Del Genovese Grotto near Levanzo. At a distance of 10 miles from Trapani, the island’s population is made up of approximately 4,600 inhabitants. Each year in May, Favignana, dominated by Mount S. Caterina, welcomes its visitors with the antique ritual of tuna fishing and the magnificent “Tonnara Florio”, an imposing example of industrial archeology. You will also find the elegant FlorioPalace constructed in the typically light style of the Liberty era. The island fascinates even further by its limpid sea steeped in history where the naval Battle of the Aegadoan Isles took place between the Romans and the Cathages in 241 bc. The island captivates with its silentbays: Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, Grotta Perciata, Cala Rotonda and surprises even more with the delightful hues of the countryside. The extraction and use of tuff, a typical Favignana sandstone and an important element of the island’s economy, lends its colours to many of the nearby towns.
